How Do You Set Boundaries in a Relationship?

The first step in setting and maintaining healthy boundaries is identifying your limits. You should ask yourself what behavior is acceptable in a relationship. 

Boundaries can be harsh and restrictive. They can also be lenient and maybe too open. All boundaries should communicate what you expect from others. 

Why Communication About Boundaries Matters

Healthy boundaries are not set in stone. They are flexible, and can depend on the setting and who you're interacting with at the time. Your boundaries should help you live in-tune with yourself and others throughout your life. If your boundaries change, it is helpful to communicate them to others. Providing clarity about your boundaries and using communication to enforce them is helpful to those around you and to your inner peace.

Setting healthy boundaries will help you and your partner understand one another better and feel more satisfaction in your relationship.
